Red Ribbon Week is the nation’s oldest and largest drug prevention activity in the nation reaching millions of Americans during the last week of October every year. By wearing red ribbons and participating in community anti-drug events, young people pledge to live a drug-free life and pay tribute to DEA Special Agent Enriqué “Kiki” Camarena.

As I travel the country discussing prevention and the value of certification, I have been growing more concerned as the professionals I speak with seem unaware of the dramatic changes the profession will undergo in the next few years.  From my perspective, there is a tsunami coming, and everyone is still standing on the beach.

Andrew Kessler, IC&RC’s Federal Policy Liaison, has recently written:

“Prevention, in all areas of health, has been a centerpiece of President Obama’s health care agenda. Much of the recent legislation focused on improving health care across the country is centered around prevention. Substance abuse is no exception. Substance abuse prevention programs can benefit from health care reform and other domestic policies, but the picture is not entirely optimistic.”

Health care reform, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s  (SAHMSA) strategic initiatives, the National Drug Control Strategy, and the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention’s (CSAP) priorities are all focusing attention and funds on prevention, and I foresee a huge revolution in the future of our professional practice. We, as prevention professionals, need to stay informed and to prepare ourselves to respond proactively to the changes.

Substance Abuse Prevention: Benefits Outweigh Costs
Spreading the Message Where It Counts

By Stephen Hahn-Smith

It is hard to refute the value of prevention, yet all too often investments in prevention fail to keep up with the need for services. This is especially true in lean economic times, when resources are scarce and competition tough. Prevention programs—addressing a range of social issues from teen pregnancy to elder abuse—have suffered enormous losses in this latest recession. When budgets are tight, priorities shift to shortterm, crisis solutions, which do little to address core causes and leave problems to persist. Many social science fields embrace taking the long view when addressing problems, seeing prevention as the cornerstone of effective problem solving. This Prevention Tactics publication will focus on the cost benefits of substance abuse prevention and how to support these essential efforts in our governments, schools, and communities.

On September 9, 2011, North Carolina will join the world in recognizing International Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Awareness Day.  On September 9, 2011, North Carolina will join the world in recognizing International Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Awareness Day.  According to the Institute of Medicine (IOM), alcohol is more damaging to an unborn baby than tobacco, crack, cocaine, marijuana or heroin. While many women stop drinking as soon as they discover they are pregnant, alcohol can affect an unborn baby even before a woman knows she is pregnant. The developing brain is highly vulnerable to the toxic effects of alcohol at every stage of pregnancy, and if a woman avoids alcohol for the entire nine months of her pregnancy, she will prevent the leading known cause of intellectual disabilities and birth defects in the United States: Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD).
